All of a sudden, they had fallen out of the sky like meteors, crashing into the ground on the beach, making sand spray up into the sky. The eggs had come out of nowhere. You could tell they were once pristine white, but now they were dirty and slimy from the weather they had endured. There were 5 of them and they were mostly spherical and at least 3 meters in height. But colossal as they were, they miraculously hadn’t cracked in the fall.
You have to remember that we are in the Mesozoic Era, a time when dinosaurs were around, so there wasn’t much interest in them. To dinosaurs, they were just normal eggs.
But me? I live and breathe for these eggs. I am the first human on earth, so I don’t exactly have much to do. I watch these eggs everyday and have done so for the past 6 months. I study their habits and wait for the day they finally hatch...
I looked at the eggs again today. From far away they looked fine, but when I looked closer I saw little cracks had appeared on them. I looked closely at my own filthy skin and saw dirt creating little waterfalls of mud and water on the crevasses of my skin. I sighed. I was going to have to take another shower in the waterfall. I continued to look at the egg, running my fingers along the delicate shell. I pushed a little bit of weight on it with my pinky finger and it almost caved in.
I decided I would come back tomorrow, as I wouldn’t want to disturb the eggs hatching process.
I walked up the beach, excited about the hatching. My research shows they were due to hatch in an hours time, but I wanted to be early just in case. I could see the eggs through the mist in front of me, their gigantic shadows blocking the sun, even from here. As I approached them, I heard the faintest screech. Tiny, even so, but still there.
Then I heard a ear-splitting CRRRRRRRRRRAAAAACCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Through a hole in the egg closest to me poked a tiny, yellow beak. Then a face. Then ever so slowly, a body and then 2 legs.
I slowly exhaled. I had been holding my breath without even knowing it. It was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen in my life! It had sapphire blue plumage with a green undercoat that glistened whenever it hit the sun. It had a bright yellow beak and a murderous glint in it’s black eyes. It’s claws were long and powerful. I hadn’t felt the force of them yet and I hoped I never would. However, it’s like it’s beak had melted into its face.
It was covered in yellow scales that died down at the neck and eventually ended in those beautiful feathers. It was huge! 2 and a half meters in height and at least 1 meter wide. I didn’t dare touch it. It was weak at first but then started to get stronger and pull itself up to standing position.
“Hey girl!” I said. I tried to sound confident but my teeth were chattering with nerves.
“HISS!!!”
The scathing tone in it’s hiss sent the hair on the back of my neck up in prickles.
“Umm… hey… boy?”
“RRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!”
The power from the roar made all my hair fly back in the wind. Then I head another blood-churning CRRRRRRRRRRAAAAACCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.
And another.
And another.
And another.
All at once they rose from the shells, growling and hissing at me.
I ran. I ran as fast as I could. Even though the dinosaurs looked beautiful and graceful, they took great, lumbering steps. Thank goodness. If they were any faster I would have been eaten alive straight away.
They took great, heavy steps, quite a bit like a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
I turned my attention to the voice that was yelling at me in the back of my head.
“You’re not going to make it!”
“They’re going to eat you!”
“You’re going to die!”
The voice was clawing at my brain, making my head throb. It was kicking me in the stomach and giving me stitch. It was making my heart beat 100 miles ph. I quickly dodged right, hoping and praying they wouldn’t follow me. I hid behind a tree, concealing myself as much as possible, but my breath would probably give it away. It was pounding in my ears, and it was as loud as a drum.
All of a sudden, I felt really sleepy and dosey, and there was a sharp pain in my chest. My legs felt like jelly and my head felt all light and woozy.
All of a sudden I collapsed.
I woke up groggily, rubbing my eyes. I was lying on the ground in the forest. That’s all I could make out because everything was blurry. I could feel the cool dirt against my cheek and the ferns tickling my forehead. I looked up and all I could see was a scaly yellow eye looking down at me.
“AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
There came a huge scream behind me, and all of sudden the dinosaurs eye got wrenched out of view. I heard a huge roar and then some grunts. Then I heard a wail and I assumed the dinosaurs had run away, as then everything was silent.
But who fought them away?
But who fought them away?
From who had the wailing come from?
“Hi, I’m Eve. Are you ok?”
I felt two hands under my arms pulling me up to sitting position against the trunk of a tree. I turned my neck and saw the most beautiful man I’d ever seen.
The man had long, blonde hair and was wearing a long top made of scaly dinosaur skin and he was carrying a spear.
“Oh my goodness! Another man!” I exclaimed.
“What? I’m not a…… man.”
“Huh?” I was really confused.
“I’m a woman, just like you.” the he/she explained.
“What? I’m not a…… woman.” I said, confused
“Yes you are!”
“No I’m not!”
“Yes you are!”
“No I’m not!”
“Oh come on, this is silly!” said Eve.
“Sorry. It’s just, I’ve never seen a woman before.”
“And I’ve never seen a man!” she excitedly exclaimed.
“I’ve been looking for someone else my whole life, and now I’ve found you!” I said.
“Yes! Look, I’m really glad and all, but the real thing we need to focus on right now are those dinosaurs. I’ve been studying and they’re even more dangerous than a Tyrannosaurus Rex! They can fly, but because they’ve only just been born they haven’t had a chance to straighten their wings. And you thought that they were big? They grow up to about 10 times the size!”
“Really?” I questioned.
“Really.” She replied. “If we’re going to get out of this alive, we are going to need a plan…”
She lent in and started whispering………
“There they are!”
“Where? I can’t see them!” I replied.
“Over there, on the beach!”
We were on a hill that we liked to call ‘The Lookout.’
We had spent a couple of days planning and getting our weapons ready. Everything came down to this.
On the count of three, OK? 1… 2… 3….. NOW!
“AGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!” I screamed. We immediately caught the attention of the dinosaurs, who swooped up their magnificent wings and started flying towards us. She was right. They did fly! It was such a shame they were so vicious, because they really were beautiful animals.
They were getting closer and closer. We readied our weapons and started aiming.
“1...2...3… SHOOT!” We both yelled at the exact same time. Eve shot her weapon at the dinosaurs. Eve’s hit right through the plumage of one at the back of the flock. It skwaked and plummeted it’s way down to the ground, head first into a nosedive. The we heard a sickening CCCCCRRRRUNCHHHHHHH as the dinosaurs spine broke.
One down, four to go.
I shot mine but it bounced off the hard scales of the dinosaurs head and onto the ground below.
I picked up a different weapon and decided to use that instead. It was made of bark, leaves and snake teeth which were embedded with poison. I pulled back the leaf as hard as I could and then let go. The snake tooth shot out of the wood, whizzing through the air and piercing another dinosaur in the heart. It kept on flying, but it’s wings got slower and slower as the poison took over his body. He plummeted to the ground.
Two down, three to go.
Eve shot another dino with a dino tooth dispenser, which is a bit like a snake tooth dispenser, but instead of poison, we used super sharp teeth. We hit it right in the eye, which was a lucky aim. It squawked a deafening squawk and dropped to the ground below.
Three down, two to go.
“Yes!” I laughed.
“Don’t get too happy yet, we’ve still got two left.” said Eve.
One of them suddenly dive bombed us, snapping it’s teeth at me and Eve.
“OW!” I hollered. I looked down. There was blood pouring from a giant gash in my shin and there was a dino tooth poking out.
“Stay there!” Eve picked up a weapon and shot the dinosaur that had hurt me down to the valley below.
Four down, one to go.
“You - got this - Eve!”I cheered through grunts of pain.
“Hang in there!” she yelled. She too was in pain, but rather emotional than physical. I wiped sweat from my brow and handed her the final weapon.
She readied it and shot.
“It’s not working!” she shouted, exasperated.
“What do you mean ‘it’s not working’?”
“IT’S NOT WORKING!!!”
“Here, use this!”
I hauled myself up and handed her the tooth from my wound.
“Make it count.” I whispered to her before placing it in her hand. She loaded the tooth, and we both put our fingers on the trigger. She looked at me, I looked at her, and then we pushed the trigger. It pierced the dinosaurs stomach, and it shrieked in pain before falling with a huge THUD to the ground.
“You did it!” I cheered.
“No, we did it.” She smiled at me.
A couple of days later, I was staying at Eve’s hut. She was admiring her beautiful new blue coat, stroking it with care.
I felt compelled to write a story about the adventure we had just encountered. But if I was going to do it, I was going to include everything. Beginning to end.
I got my charcoal ready and started writing.
All of a sudden, they had fallen out of the sky like meteors, crashing into the ground on the beach, making sand spray up into the sky…
